Melon-shaped Ewer
12th Century
Melon-shaped Ewer
H. 16 cm; Diam.19.7 cm

Vessels modeled in the form of the melon—a symbol of abundance of descendants—are common in Goryeo celadon. This piece is covered all over with glaze of "kingfisher color"—a translucent grayish green color that is greener than blue compared to China's Ru ware. The ewer has a twelve-lobed body and an eight-lobed stopper. The glaze pools in the grooves between lobes, adding depth and variety to the beauty of the vessel. The base is also glazed. The overall shape, though, is less symmetrical.
